Snow in April?

I really don't mind watching the snow fall when it means I don't have to drive to far in it. As awesome as March has been sans snow and the wonderful weather we're all expecting this weekend it should be noted that this:

...is what we had April 6, 2009... might not be over just yet but at least it will be picturesque if it does decide to snow this month. And as you can see Daytona really loves the snow :-) It generally causes him to bounce around the yard like Tigger... just not on his tail.

Is summer here yet? : Tobermory Photographer

As the sun continues to teases us this week and the warmer air keeps getting a little warmer each day I know my husband is gearing up for an awesome second summer of scuba diving. He's taken to scuba like a fish to water and is loving it. More trips to Tobermory ahead... probably Kingston and possibly Halifax if our schedules will allow for it.

We headed to Tobermory for Jamie's last couple of dives for the 2009 season on the Thanksgiving long weekend. It was pretty nice heading out and at the first dive spot but by the second it was freakin' cold, windy and rocky! The Maritimer in my was doing good though but I was still pretty happy to set my two feet firmly on land when we got back.

And no I haven't tried scuba diving yet... I'm not ruling it out but just not feeling as excited about the idea of so much water over my head.

What about you? Are you or someone you know a scuba diver? Any recommendations on great dive spots, ship wrecks we should check out this summer?

Barrie Newborn Photographer : My nephew Issac

If you're a fan over on facebook you've already seen all the pictures I've been sharing off my little nephew, Issac. I'm a first time auntie and I was so happy to make the trip to NB to visit my sister and Issac before he grew too much!

Just absolutely in 'aw' of him and how content he was. My sister has fallen right into the role of mommy and is doing such a wonderful job. And it was just fun to be able to spend some quite time with them and hold him while he slept. Something I don't get to do with my clients little ones... lol... that might be kind of creepy, no? I'm thinking probably.... hopefully it will be my turn to become a mommy soon.

Jamie is always up before I am and can you guess who will take his spot as soon as he's done with a morning pee?! .... The dog. Daytona will race upstairs to jump up and take Jamie's spot in bed. I wonder if maybe he thinks he needs to race because he has to get there before Jamie does? lol

Either way it's pretty freaking cute, don't you think?

You may or may not know that I LOVE my iPhone... as in I could possibly have a problem. If you asked my husband Jamie he'd likely tell you (while laughing) that I touch my iPhone more then I touch him. He's joking... I promise.

That said of course I was very excited to see the company I use for online proofing make the leap to the iPhone as well. They've come up with an app that will allow you to view your online proof albums via your iPhone! Love it!

All you need to do is download the app to your iPhone, open and enter your Event ID provided by STUDIO dpi!

Just another way to share your images with family and friends while you're on the go and even place your order!

Baby O's newborn session was perfection with a drop of sugar on top! Such a great afternoon and he didn't mind the big flashing light so long as mom and dad stayed really close.

As always I'm so appreicative of my clients who allow me to shoot in their homes. I beleive that bringing home baby would be full of emotions and by doing the session in your home I think it's just one less thing to worry about and makes moms & dads more relaxed so baby is too!

You guys where fantastic!

Barrie Yoga Photography DAY!

Ann Green of studio BLISS ann green yoga was one of my very first clients just over 6 years ago and it has been so much fun to watch her little guy grow over the years through our sessions together.

I've also been honoured to work with Ann on her business needs. I know I don't mention it all that often but I'm also a web/graphic designer and work with small businesses in establishing their online presence, logo and branding, website development and over all 'go to' when it comes to technical issues and troubleshooting.

Ann opened her very own studio space just over a year ago and last month I had my very first ever yoga photography day for her members. It was an awesome afternoon in her wonderful space and the light couldn't have been more brilliant. Just delicious!

Thank you so much to those of you how participated. I'm hoping to make this a semiannual event at the studio and maybe next time outside... at the park or maybe the beach!

I'm often asked about purchasing a copy of your session on CD/DVD and I have two options for my clients to pick from.

1. a DVD of your session in full resolution quality or
2. a CD of your session in low resolution quality which is perfect for printing up to 4x6 prints and scrapbooking, emailing, posting to facebook until your hearts content!

You must check out Julie's Smashing Cake Designs blog as well (we're still working on finishing her website!) as she is just as amazing with flour and icing sugar as she is with paper and scissors. She can also whip up a cake for your child's cake smashing session and we'll have it ready and waiting for you at the studio making that one less thing on your own to do list!

The Isabella Oliver maternity line is so amazing and a source of great inspiration when it comes to dressing up and showing off your baby bump.

Barrie Baby Photographer : H. 3 month session

I haven't been doing a very good job of keeping up with this blog.. for that I'm sorry. I hope you'll skip on over to facebook and join me there which usually sees more action then my blog it would seem.

Last weekend one of my sessions was this little guy's 2nd session of my Baby's First Year package... which means he's now 3 months old! I'm not sure where the time goes and I'm sure his mom and dad have been asking themselves the same question.

On a personal note I'm off on a crazy quick 3 day trip to Halifax and then Fredericton where I'll finally get to meet my first and only nephew, Issac (born Feb. 19). I had considered getting my little sister a gift card with another photographer in Fredericton but decided why would I do that when I get to meet him and photograph him all in the same trip!

Can't wait! Watch for a little sneak peek of that session on Facebook. And in the meantime Happy Weekend Everyone :-)

...why? I say why not?! You don't have to be in the midst of an engagement to do something fun and different as a couple.

It was so much fun to go out and shoot with this very cute couple Danielle & Ben. Ben was such a great sport... I even asked him to take off his shirt and he started to do it! I was only teasing him though :-)

Thanks you guys for a fun night of shooting in Barrie... I only wish we had more time and the light didn't disappear on us so fast... next time!

Who doesn't love a great excuse to dine outside on a beautiful summer evening surrounded by good food and fabulous women?!

A few weeks ago my step mom Tina invited me to join her and a group of local female entrepreneurs for dinner. Little did I know Tina would go all out... well honestly I'm not entirely surprised but that's just Tina but I was still taken back by how awesome everything looked. And of course my Aunt Carm was there to help pull it all off!

All the ladies smiling pretty for me... I'm not sure anyone really wanted to have their picture taken but I'm happy that they humbled me for a few minutes for a quick photo op.

Everyone brought a dish and it was a perfect mixture of delicious salads and yummy desserts. Tina above putting the finishing touches on a warm potato salad.

And it wouldn't be a party without something to take home... we all received our own little creamer seen here on the right.

If someone had told me I would find myself at a yoga retreat someday I'm pretty sure I would not have believed them... me? But I have to tell you since I started practicing yoga again with Ann Green at studio BLISS ann green yoga I could not be more excited about the retreat I'm going to participating in this month.

I have known Ann for over 5 years now! Wow! Our friendship started in the studio when she and Dave came to me for pictures of her beautiful round belly as they awaited the arrival of their son. From there the last five years has included lots of photo sessions but also lots of graphic and web design as Ann built up her yoga business and now she is at home in her very own space on Welham Road in Barrie which opened just this year.

I could not be more excited to be a part of her business but most importantly to be able to practice yoga there. The teachers, classes and the most amazing schedule and variety is second to none for our area in my opinion. Since Ann opened in March I started with the foundation and deliciously wonderful restorative classes to get my bearings and then when suddenly I noticed I felt a little restless in class I decided to kick it up a notch and go for Ann's Kikasana and Ashtanga classes and I'm so glad I did! I have finally found that something (that get my heart rate up) that I look forward to doing... that I don't avoid and spend my day coming up with excuses why I can't go, or don't want to go. This is serious people! LOL.....I'm in love with yoga!

So this September I will be there... among the other yogi's getting my "downward dog" on with everyone else.

Thank you Ann! I know it took awhile for me to make the leap but I'm so glad I took it when I did... it has truly made all the difference for me at this point in my life and I'm pretty excited to see where it will take me too! :-)

I had so much fun a couple of weeks ago with the extended MacDermott Family... the whole family was there! It was mom and dad's 40th wedding anniversary and what better way to celebrate then a weekend full of fun and lots of family around.

Yeah I know I'm sure you've seen all kinds of stuff about him and when I received the email via my iPhone while standing in line at the rogers store I just couldn't believe it... my thoughts went straight to his kids but then this morning... oh dear... of course my favorite radio station CHUM FM in Toronto is playing only his songs and talking about their memories and people are calling in telling their stories, their playing audio clips and I really started to remember all those memories, my own MJ memories from so very long ago. And maybe shed a tear or two for him and maybe more likely for my own childhood and what use to be, for those memories that don't stay close to the surface as they get pushed down further and further with all the to do's of what is my day to day life now.

So today I'm remembering my childhood and my Dad blasting music from his workshop, popping his head out to let us know... "I'm going to start the saw now".... "ok dad".....

While I was there I did get a tour of the farm and gardens and these are just a few of my favorites from the day.

Daddy's Little Girl

If there is one person who has remained a true constant in my life to date it is my Dad. I've tried a few times over the last few days to find just the right ensemble of words but I get teary eyed and nothing just seems to sound as perfect as it should. So instead I think I'll just share with you one story, one memory.

About a week or so ago I was driving up highway 11 heading toward home when I saw my dad and my 9 year old self... but of course it wasn't me or my dad but it was us circa 1987. Just the two of us heading out for another tour around Fredericton on his motorcycle.

Some of my most early memories are on a bike with my dad. We use to head out on a warm summer night for a drive, we'd tour around downtown, following the streets along the Saint John river, up to the university and then out onto the highway to really let it rip. I remember the anticipation of not knowing where we'd be going next, one turn after another and always being excited when the turn toward home didn't come too quickly.

6 month session

I'm a few weeks behind on some of my recent sessions and I just realized I haven't updated you on how my 6 month session went with this little man.

He is the son of my naturopathic doctor and although I'm sure his mom and dad would like him to slow down this 'growing fast and furious' process he's on in his first year... I on the other hand can't wait to put together a baby's first year book for them.

We have 9 and 12 month sessions left to go!!! Can you believe how big he's getting? And those cheeks!!!

You know those friends who you just love to see but it always seems months (sometimes years) go by between visits??? I'm sure you have at least a couple of friends where this is the case... Mike and Leah are one such couple who I don't get to see nearly enough but finally last weekend I got down to Cambridge for a visit and oh my goodness did we have fun!!!

I can't believe how much the boys have changed... I think it's been just over 2 years since our last visit (I promise it won't be that long again before the next Leah) and I'm so proud of my pup Daytona for playing so well with them... he was exhausted by the time we made our way back to my dad and step mom's place.

Leah and I met over 10 years ago (oh my goodness!) when I started working at The Levi's Outlet located on the outskirts of Waterloo, also known as St. Jacobs. I managed to break the ice quickly it would seem after my dyslexia proved to be a source of entertainment on my very first day of work. But I'll save that story for another day.

Leah and Mike have been so good to me over the last 10 years... I hardly know where to start. I use to stay with them most weekends when I was attending Sheridan just so I could put in a couple of shift at Levi's Outlet, Mike has helped me with car stuff... changing windshield wiper blades?? how do I do that?... taking my car for oil changes...and oh my goodness the amount of laundry I use to do... Leah pretty much taught me the ways of a washer and dryer... to this day I think of her every time I shake out the wet stuff and toss it in the dryer. LOL

How things have changed... no little boys running around back then.. just a cranky cat that had it out for my feet. Perhaps things where simpler overall but I can't imagine it any other way today. Two perfect little boys full of life and energy to spare, a proud Mom and Dad and a humble friend still loitering on the couch lucky enough to have friendships that stand the test of time.

Thanks you guys... next time I'll bring Jamie along too!

Mother's Day weekend

Mom blogger, Humps N Bumps (now Humps and Baby) has been blogging since she discovered she found out she was expecting... a surprise pregnancy but a blessing none the less.... I can't remember exactly how I stumbled onto her blog but I'm glad I did... there seems to be so many bloggers in the US I just love being able to find ones I love reading that are closer to home.

We had a newborn session with her little girl who we'll call 'baby' just as mom does on her blog. It was an awesome session overall... I feel so blessed and just absolutely honoured that I get to do this... to be invited into someones home when so many are probably vying for mom's time... or rather baby holding time. We had a very peaceful morning and let 'baby' call the shots on when to go snap happy and when to take a step back for some cuddles or a feeding time.

This is exactly the way I like a newborn session to go... slowly, quietly... soaking up all that newborn baby goodness. There is no need to rush through any photo session... that anxiety only flows through everyone else involved and the end result isn't what either client or photographer wants. But when it's just right you get great shots like these!

Thank you Humps for a wonderful session! I know you're having a hard time choosing but personally I can't help but think that couldn't possibly be a bad thing!! :-)

4 month mohawk

His mom tells me he had a full head of hair the day he was born but as most parents probably already know that doesn't always stick around for long. And so Jackson now has the most AWESOME mohawk happening and he couldn't possibly be any cuter!!!

Lee Anne Widawski owns The Healing Oasis right here in Barrie and I couldn't be more proud to call her a friend. Her business just keeps on growing and she is on the heels of celebrating 2 years in her new space with a wellness team that's hard to beat in my opinion.

This week we headed out for a quick mini session after my reflexology session with Anna Nicol... don't even get me started on how wonderful Anna is... pure relaxation!!!

Lee Anne and I first met while taking Donna Douglas - Go Venture program (group 2... and now Donna has group #19 starting.. craziness!!). Lee Anne is a registered massage therapist and solid business woman and we've often bounced business ideas around as we take on new promotional ideas. I love that she appreciates a solid branding of her business identity and I'm proud to be a part of that as I've created 2 websites now for The Healing Oasis as well as logo, e-newsletters, signage & brochures over the last 5 years.

Our mini session was long overdue as the last business head shot we did was over 2 years ago!!!

So why title this blog "Transformation"?

This big guy is now 6 months old!! I can hardly believe how awesome he is and I can't wait for our next session this Monday. Fingers are crossed that the weather cooperates so we can get some great shots of him and his mom and dad.

I am now 31... yes (look at clock) officially 31.

I am determined to keep changing and growing as I get older now... no more grasping for something else or questioning my direction. I promise to be true to myself and do what makes me happy and of course proud of my work. That's what this year has been about for me... growing, changing, questioning and in some aspects letting things go.

This weekend I will take an extra long weekend with Jamie at my dad and step mom's lake house in Hanover. Some relaxing, visiting and dune buggie'ing is in order. I'll try and remember to get Jamie to snap a couple of picks of me in said dune buggie and my pink helmet! lol I love pink!

I hope you all have a great weekend and take a little time out for some snuggles with the ones you love most!

It has been an interesting 24 hours to say the least since I started my search for 10 to 20 photographers who might also be interested in participating in one of Dane's Fast Track Photographers workshops.

Yoga tonight!

I am off to my first class at studio BLISS here in Barrie tonight!!! I am nervous and excited... I use to practice yoga fairly regularly but in the last few years I haven't kept it up.

This month I will be joining the Tuesday and Thursday Yoga Foundations class at 5:30pm. This is perfect for me since I live in Orillia and who wants to drive back to Barrie after you get home and have dinner? Not me. So Ann has honored my special request for a dinner hour class and I hope that there are many more that share my thinking.

Ann Green was first a client but is now a true friend. From pregnancy session to baby's first year sessions, family to graphic and web design and redesigns to yoga photo sessions... a growing business relationship but more importantly a growing friendship 5 years in the making.

Last Sunday, Ann opened the doors to her very own yoga space... studio BLISS!! And it is exactly that.

my nickname... compliments of my little sister. She couldn't get a handle on saying Malinda when we where much younger so Mina or Minna is what came out and well... it stuck. It stuck so much so that a lot of people (family and friends) call me Mina.

For some reason I noticed it yesterday when my husband and I where talking... how much we have grown together as a couple, partners in crime, best friends.. he is my other half and I love that even he without thinking calls me Mina too.

... I have just realized that my last post was now over a month ago!! Seriously?! How does this happen.

We have had a busy month. As its been kind of quite lately we managed to get the livingroom painted.. no scratch that... my husband painted the livingroom including a fresh coat on the kitchen! I was busy building a new website for one of my friends and clients, Ann Green.

And I had a great girls weekend with my friend and fellow photographer, Margie this month too. She had just returned from WPPI Las Vegas so we had a brain storming session about marketing, new products and talked shop.

This little... okay big guy is growing like crazy. He is now 3 months old and 18lbs!

Milk does the baby body good!

He was an absolute super star this weekend and I'm sure mom and dad are going to have a hard time picking out there favorites from our session... sorry Mom and Dad! I'll post some of our first session together soon, at just 13 days old... a side by side is a must. After 12 months I can't wait to see the baby book I'll be able to put together for these parents. So many changes, milestones to come over this first year with baby.

This is just a snap shot from my iPhone but if I had moved to get my camera Mr. Daytona would have been up with me.

Here he is in action!

It always amazes me that we can put his bed where ever we need to and he's content to sleep there... this also works for the small fluffy mat we have for the truck. It goes from truck to cottage and he knows that's where we want him to sleep unless of course he can find room on the couch.

Being that I'm in the business of photographing expectant moms I thought you might enjoy one of my most recent guilty pleasures. Momversation.com The one below is from the dad/husband's perspective and its great!

I'm noticing a serious trend with blogging in the US that seems to be an industry all its own (yeah I know I"m just catching on but hey life's busy... right?!). Mom's making money blogging about being a a mom, a working mom, a wife, daughter, sister, fertile mom, infertile mommy wanna be, weight loss mom, food mom, chef mom, single mom and well the list goes on and on.

I have a list of blogs I follow, friends from afar whom I've never met or spoken to in person that I enjoy catching up on their story... their lives as they unfold. Its pretty amazing the connection you can feel to someones story based on how they present themselves online. And some of those blogs I've made a sincere effort to comment and thank them for sharing... you can find a real sense of comfort in someone else's story that might be a chapter you're hoping to add to your life or a chapter your plugging through right now.

You'll notice to the right I have a "Sharing Stuff" rectangle of links... these are posts from blogs I love and follow via my google reader. When there is something that inspires me, makes me smile or laugh or cry or want to share with you....you can find it hear.

Dance!

I have so enjoyed watching So you think you can dance Canada... a dancer for 14 years growing up a small part of me wishes I had kept up with my training but I'm not sure my skin was thick enough for some aspects of dance. Perhaps that's what inspired my move into a career in photography, another avenue to create and work with the body as I so enjoy photographing people. And more specifically women during an expectant mom session or intimate boudoir session... I love seeing a woman raise her head a little higher as we go through the session and I can share with them (love digital) what I see through my lens.

Congratulations Nico... loved what you had to say about dance and the SYTYCD Canada experience. All of these dancers made Canada very proud and I'm looking forward to following those glimpses into your careers as your time on SYTYCD comes to an end.

Had a wonderful time at the Lakehouse but without my husband to share in the festivities I decided it was time to head home early on Monday. Jamie was up at the Gravenhurst Fire College completing part 1 of another course. We're looking forward to heading to Hanover again hopefully before the end of October.

What a great weekend! A productive Saturday on the computer while the clouds loomed outside and a great afternoon outside on Sunday with blue sky, big clouds and sun shining.

I bought a new lens last week so that was the focus of my afternoon of photography... playing around to see what I came up with.

Off to the Lakehouse!

This is what I like to call my Dad and Step Mom's 2nd home just outside Hanover.... some call it the cottage but honestly this place is anything but a cottage. I gorgeous old farm house with 36 acres to boot.... its a great place to unwind... time kinda stands still there and everyone is comfortable to do whatever they want whether it be 4-wheeling, canoeing on the lake, working in the gardens, driving the tractor, cooking, relaxing on the porch, crafts in the kitchen, playing with the dogs, long walks in the woods or hanging out for an evening of movies.

I'm really looking forward to exploring the paths this weekend and capturing some fall colours. This picture is of my sweet husband portaging the canoe back up to the garage while I carried the life vests, paddles and juggled my camera... just a point and shoot at that... but you just never know where inspiration will strike!

It was such an amazing day yesterday and couldn't have been more perfect for a late afternoon shoot. After the "craft your success" workshop and more emails back and forth with Margie then we've ever emailed before I'm reminded and more aware then I've been in awhile just how much I love photographing people. Its easy to forget when you're doing your thing each day that you are an artist even if your only tool is a camera and of course an iMac.

We had such a relaxed stroll through the trees, walking and talking, laughing and shooting that when we got back in the car and realized it was 7pm we where both very surprised to say the least.

I don't always get to go outside with my expectant moms but yesterday just unfolded and it wasn't about getting all the "standards" but about creating something for this very special expectant mom where she feels most comfortable.

For me personally I believe this event minus one presenter was extremely valuable (to get the break down on what happened check out Margie's blog).

- I left knowing that my approach is similar to other photographers and is valid.
- That the things I've been meaning to do for awhile now... need to be done because they WILL benefit my business.
- To start thinking like the artist that I am (even though I sometimes question myself... "what you mean everyone can't take great pictures?")
- That shooting weddings isn't my thing and that's okay! I love shooting people and what I really love is making a woman feel really really good about herself whether is a portrait, an expectant mom or boudoir session. And cute kids is the icing on the cake!
- That its okay to get personal on a business blog. I've kind struggled with this, how much do I open up and the truth is, I'm generally a pretty open book with few exceptions. I shoot from my home studio because I think inviting a young family into my home is a perfect compliment to getting those great shots... come on in and relax! Let's take some pictures, no worries, a break here and there works for me.

I'm interested to see how the western part of craft your success unfolds (truth be told I wish I was a fly on the wall today in Winnipeg). I truly believe that this experience was completely valuable and worth my time and effort even if it had a bit of ugly mixed in at the end of the day. AND I got to spend some time with Margie, which is always a good thing!

David Greene and Michael Anderson...... thank you for sharing your insights/tips/tricks/knowledge/thoughts with your fellow Ontario photographers. I wish you much success on Craft your Success 2009 (which I hope there will be).

update: what makes me most excited about this event is the sharing that I anticipate will take place... I have run into too many photographers that the aspect of sharing and being open and forthcoming with tips, technique etc has been lost as though we are all competing for the same business, the same clients. I don't believe this is the way photography works... I believe that if you love someones work you will pay to be photographed by that person because you want a piece of their artistry, their skill, their talent.

An acquaintance once asked me how she'd know if she was being "ripped off" while they started the search for their wedding photographer... and I told her... if you love someones work that is the price you will pay.

I believe finding a great photographer and loving their work and investing in them and the quality of work they will produce for you is key a fantastic photographer/client relationship. I feel connected to my clients and feel so humbled by having been chosen to photograph them and capture the milestones in their lives.

Photographer Rafael Goldchain's Polish-Jewish ancestors emigrated to South America in the 1930s, and many others perished in Poland during the Nazi regime. Also lost in the turmoil of war and emigration were most of the portraits of his extended family. When Goldchain became a parent himself, he decided to make up for this lack of evidence and recreate the lost gene-rations of the past, in the present.

The last two months have been about putting my best business foot forward. With my new website almost complete I'm so excited for 2008 and know this will be one of STUDIO dpi's most exciting years in business yet. For the first time in 4 years I believe I finally have a grasp on concrete print advertising efforts. And with more sessions already being booked in comparison to 2007 and the best clients you could possibly imagine I'm thrilled to share with you my photography.
